It is summer in the remote Patagonian village of San Lorenzo. Mario, a young engineer from the city arrives in town at the same time as the migrating flamingos. For Mario it's his first visit to this hapless nest of faded houses and rocky paths which seem to lead nowhere. San Lorenzo looks to him like the end of the world. But for the locals Mario's visit is the event of the year. The government is looking into the possibility of building an overland route for the transport of pleasure boats. The road will pass through San Lorenzo en route to a distant lake. The project promises at once to boost the local economy and provide relief from the daily monotony of their lives. They welcome Mario's arrival. But this atmosphere cools considerably after Mario begins helping a local Indian woman search for her missing father. His investigation is blocked at every turn by influential townspeople and he soon begins to suspect that the old man's disappearance is no coincidence.
