Her sound performance leads her to be offered an appointment within Special Investigations, the undercover plain clothes branch of the military police. This branch deals with serious crimes such as murder and theft, but it also deals with homosexuality. The SIB have heard reports of a so-called "ring of lesbians" operating in an army base and Caroline is send to investigate. She and a male SIB officer pretend to enjoy a night out in a pub, secretly watching the suspects' behaviour, especially that of a young private. The SIB subject her to a cruel interrogation. The private breaks down and confesses she has slept with women. Caroline is shaken by the brutality of the interview and pours out her worries to her friend Chrissie, questioning the enforcement of army policy. Chrissie reveals that she herself is a lesbian and that it's simply a matter of not getting caught. Then, after a raid on an accommodation block of 80 women, a distraught Caroline breaks down in front of Chrissie and they end up making love. Chrissie is Caroline's first lesbian partner but their relationship doesn't last. Caroline begins to face a choice between conscience and equity on the one hand and her career on the other. But it is a choice that will eventually be made by others. |
