Somebody once said that God made just one mistake when He made man. He should have given even human being two lives, one for practice and one for keeps. Santiago decides to correct this divine error. He finds it thoroughly acceptable when he gets up, as he does every morning, that his family have gathered to sing Happy Birthday, and that when he appears they embrace him, shower him with kisses and give him presents. But he finds it impossible to accept the present that his young son has given him. And he can't believe the boy's declarations of love. And that's why he shouts at the boy and throws him out of the house. Turning angrily on the rest of his family, he demands a better son, a son who doesn't need glasses, who isn't fat... a son that takes after him a little bit. |
