Four-year-old Jairan belongs to a large family in Tehran and gets little attention from them. Her parents are too occupied with the daily chores and her brothers and sisters are all busy with school. Longing to find someone to play with, Jairan begs her neighbour, Mrs. Masume Khanoom, to take her along with her while she exchanges her pensioner's coupons for a bag of rice. Since her own son is no help and she can't see well or walk quickly, Masume decides that Jairan might be useful on the shopping trip. The two make their way through the crowded streets of Tehran only to find that the store is closed. Masume is exhausted and depressed. A passer-by encourages Masume to try another store and this time she is successful. But bad luck continues to dog Masume. On the bus the sack of rice rips and its contents spill out onto the floor. Masume is exasperated and implores God to help. Her prayers are heard... by the other passengers, who help her retrieve the spilled rice. Then, waiting to transfer to another bus, Jairan hears children playing in a nearby park. She'd love to join them but Masume is worried about the rice... |
