An elderly, independent-minded archeologist suddenly decides to get out of the car in which she is travelling. She continues her journey on her own, determined to visit a friend. She loses her way and eventually boards a bus whose driver is unhelpful and whose passengers are thoroughly uninterested in her plight. Dumped at a remote gas station in the middle of the rainy night, she gets a lift with a pair of truckers who stop at a rough roadside inn. The light in her bare room can't be turned off and a doll in the closet brings back memories of childhood. She has nightmares of falling down a flight of stairs and when she wakes up she finds herself back on the same bus...
