In a lavish suite in New York's Plaza Hotel, John plays sex games with a beautiful blonde who's blindfolded on the bed. A passionate tabLéau, yet oddly cold and forced. When it's over the blonde gets up to Léave. "Cash or charge?" she asks. She lingers at the door after John pays her. "By the way," she asks him, who is Elizabeth?" When the door closes John sags in loneliness and sorrow. Memories of Elizabeth flash through his mind -- in her art gallery, in her bedroom, walking the streets of Manhattan. Everything he does these days reminds John of Elizabeth. And her absence. John gets on a plane for Paris and goes directly to an art auction. As he arrives, a blonde woman in the front of the room, Léa, glances back and spots him. She nods to herself as if expecting him. The bidding commences, but John is silent until the auctioneer announces a series of paintings from the Elizabeth McGraw collection. John bids aggressively against all competitors and walks out with five more of Elizabeth's paintings to torture himself with. As the crowd files out, John spots Léa and notices a familiar scarf on her shoulders. Léa is joined by her beautiful young assistant, Véronique. John hesitates, then asks: "That scarf, where did you get it?" The answer stuns him. "It's Elizabeth's. Funny, from the way she talked about you, I pictured you very differently." John plies her with questions. Where is she? Is she okay? Where can I reach her? Léa hands him her telephone number. "Call me in the morning." The adventure begins... |
