Dir.: Wong Kar-Wai

Born in Shanghai in 1958, Wong Kar-Wai moved to Hong Kong at the age of 5 and graduated in graphic design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic College in 1980. After a two-year apprenticeship with Hong Kong TV, he became a screenwriter, authoring a score of scripts between 1982 and 1987. In 1988 Wong directed his first film, AS TEARS GO BY (nominated for ten prizes at the Hong Kong Film Awards). He followed this auspicious debut with DAYS OF BEING WILD (1990), ASHES OF TIME (1994), CHUNGKING EXPRESS (1994) and FALLEN ANGELS (1995). HAPPY DAYS won the prize for Best Direction at this year's Cannes Festival.

Lai Yiu-Fai and Ho Po-Wing were in love when they arrived in Argentina from Hong Kong. But something went wrong on their trip south in search of adventure. One day, on the road, Ho Po-Wing walked out on his lover. Now Lai works as a doorman at a tango bar in Buenos Aires. He is trying to save enough to buy a plane ticket home. When Ho re-enters his life, bruised and bleeding from a fight, he gives him a bed but refuses to get back into a sexual relationship. Domesticity doesn't suit Ho, who is soon spending nights out on the town. Lai quits his job and starts working in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant, where he befriends Zhang, a kid from Taiwan. Without realizing it, Lai's life begins to undergo changes. Ho, meanwhile, continues to fall apart...
