Dir.: José Luis Garci Born in Madrid in 1944, José Luis Garci began his career in cinema as a critic, reviewing films for Signo, Cinestudio, Reseña and other Spanish magazines. He switched to writing scripts in 1968 and made his directorial debut with a short, "Al Futbol", in 1974. Garci directed his first feature, ASIGNATURA PENDIENTE, in 1977, and he followed it with two more features, SOLOS EN LA MADRUGADA (1978) and LAS VERDES PRADERAS (1979), both critical and commercial successes and films that established their author as one of Spain's top directors. This reputation was confirmed in 1981 with EL CRACK and, especially, with TO BEGIN AGAIN (1982), which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Garci's other features are: EL CRACK DOS (1983), SESION CONTINUA (1984), ASIGNATURA APROBADA (1987) and CANCIÓN DE CUNA (1994) which won the Special Grand Prize of the Jury and Best Direction at the Montreal World Film Festival. |

A provincial town in Spain in the mid-1950s. Dr. Molinos, a well-known cardiologist, doesn't get along anymore with his wife Isabel, but the severe social atmosphere of the times obliges them to keep up appearances. They behave correctly -- if somewhat coldly -- toward Escola and Jovita, their two maidservants, and they make sure that their personal animosities are never expressed in public. This arrangement becomes strained, however, when a new young colleague enters the doctor's life. Intelligent, amusing and sensual, Julia awakens in Molinos feelings that had lain dormant for years. He acquires a new taste for life. But there's the problem of his marriage: Isabel won't accept divorce, not even separation. Molinos' only recourse is criminal. He begins to plan how to do it. He'll make use of his professional expertise. But before anything can happen, his daughter, a missionary nun, decides to leave to Africa. Molinos changes his plans... "Love. Love of the cinema, love of actors, love of directing. It's love, elemental and mysterious, that animates the entire picture." -- José Luis Merino (La Farola, Madrid) |
