Two friends, Jeanne et Johanna, are members of a pleasant but old-fashioned band called Les Sirènes that's been sweeping the Decazeville area playing at everything from the Miss Aveyron pageant to local balls. Though fast friends, the girls are thoroughly different in character. Where Jeanne is sentimental and introverted, Johanna is gregarious and seductive. A competition in Toulouse changes their lives. Thanks to a clever scheme devised by the sound engineer whereby Johanna lip-syncs on stage to a recording of Jeanne's voice, the girls are suddenly hits. Or, to be more precise, Johanna is. What a stage presence, what a voice! Engagements flood in, but the unequal stardom will be devastating to the two girls. They quickly discover that in this society appearance is everything and there is just one thing that has no price -- their friendship. |
