René, an old, blind poet, travels around the world with his beautiful young companion Sibilla, giving a series of lectures. A spirited and inquiring young woman, she becomes his window on the world. But, much as she loves the old writer, Sibilla is constantly unfaithful to him. In Madrid she falls in love with a young torero, whose vitality charms René as well. When the torero dies suddenly, René and Sibilla, recently married, are profoundly depressed. Paradoxically, this also liberates René and Sibilla from any personal obligations and they continue their sybaritic voyage across Europe, marking each new stop with new experiences and an inexorable progression toward the poet's final retirement -- from travelling, from lecturing and, eventually, from life itself. Back in Paris, René makes his last public appearance and settles his personal and professional affairs...
