Good-natured Dimitri has a passion for Esther but Esther's interest in Dimitri remains resolutely platonic. Dimitri's hobbies -- chess and astronomy -- don't seem to excite the opposite sex. Esther likes to hang out with Dimitri, talking constantly about love but never making it. Whatever romantic notions she may have, she saves for hot-headed thugs guaranteed to mistreat her. His friend Maarten advises Dimitri to be less of a shoulder for women to cry on and more of a cold-hearted macho. Dimitri heeds his friend and attempts to win over Esther by playing the bastard instead of the bridesmaid, but the ploy fails. Gino, on the other hand, is a genuine bastard and has no trouble getting girls into bed. Except the one he really wants. No matter how much he professes his love for Susan, she doesn't believe him. All she can see in Gino is an aggressive chauvinist and it turns her off. That's when Dimitri runs into Susan... "A slender but sunny romp that is well written and often genuinely funny... Performances are fresh and natural." -- David Rooney (Variety)
