JURY OF THE 21st WORLD FILM FESTIVAL
LUIZ CARLO BARRETO
Born in the state of Ceara, Brazil, Luiz Carlos
Barreto came to Rio de Janeiro in 1947 to work as a
photographer and reporter on O Cruzeiro, the principal
magazine of the time. He began his filmmaking career in
1961 as a co-writer and co-producer of THE PAY TRAIN
ROBBERY, directed by Robert Farias. The films
success led quickly to others and Barreto became one of
the key producers of the Brazilian Cinema Novo. He
directed THIS IS PELE in 1974. Along with many films by
Glauber Rocha, Carlos Diegues and Nelson Pereira dos
Santos, he produced most of the films by his sons F�bio
(�NDIA, THE DAUGHTER OF THE SUN, O QUATRILHO) and Bruno
(DO�A FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS, AMOR BANDIDO),
including FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER, which is showing at
this years festival.
SHYAM BENEGAL
Born in Hyderabad, India in 1934, Shyam Benegal
became active in the film society movement at college,
and after graduating in economics, he embarked on a
career in advertising. Eventually he gravitated towards
TV and documentaries, working for WGBH in Boston and the
Childrens Television Workshop in New York. On
return to India, Benegal launched his directorial career
with the documentary, A CHILD OF THE STREETS (1967). He
made his first fiction feature, ANKUR, in 1974. He has
since directed twenty other features as well as several
documentaries, TV series and shorts. Among his films are:
NISHANT (1975), JUNOON (1978), ANTARNAAD (1981), MANDI
(1983), TRIKAAL (1985), SURAJ KA SATVAN GHODA (1992), THE
MAKING OF THE MAHATMA (1995) and SARDARI BEGUM (1997),
which is showing at this years festival.
SERGEI BODROV
Born in Khabarovsk, Russia in 1948, Sergei Bodrov
studied screenwriting before becoming a journalist. His
work for the satirical magazine, Crocodile, won him
numerous literary prizes. After a lengthy career as a
screenwriter he made his directorial debut in 1985 with
SWEET DREAMS IN THE GRASS, which won a silver prize at
the Moscow Festival. He has since directed: I HATE YOU
(1986), NON-PROFESSIONALS (1987), FREEDOM IS PARADISE
(Grand Prize of the Americas at the 1989 Montreal World
Film Festival), THE GAMBLER (1990), THE MAN IN RED SQUARE
(1991), I WANTED TO SEE ANGELS (1992), WHITE KING, RED
QUEEN (1992) and PRISONER OF THE MOUNTAINS (1996), which
was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar.
CLAUDE FOURNIER
Claude Fourniers directorial debut, DEUX FEMMES
EN OR (1970) was one of the all-time box-office hits of
Quebec cinema. He has since directed ALIEN THUNDER
(1972), JE SUIS LOIN DE TOI, MIGNONNE (1978), THE TIN
FLUTE (adapted from the novel by Gabrielle Roy, 1982),
LES TISSERANDS DU POUVOIR (two-part feature and a TV
mini-series, 1986) and JEN SUIS! (1997). As a
scriptwriter, Fournier adapted Arlette Coustures
novel "Ces Enfants dailleurs" for
television. He has also published two collections of
poems, a novel ("Les Tisserands du pouvoir")
and a controversial 1995 essay on Ren� L�vesque,
"Ren� L�vesque, portrait dun homme
seul". Since 1972 he has been associated with
Marie-Jos� Raymond in the production company, Rose Films
Inc.
GIOVANNA GAGLIARDO
Giovanna Gagliardo began her career in journalism.
She was an editor at Il Giorno and at Il Messaggero and
was in charge of the arts section of La Repubblica and
LEspresso. She was co-writer of Nelo Risis
UNA STAGIONE ALLINFERNA and she was screenwriter on
all of Hungarian director Mikl�s Jancs�s Italian
films (THE PACIFIST, LA TECNICA E IL RITO, ROMA RIVUOLE
CESARE and PRIVATES VICES, PUBLIC VIRTUES). She made her
own directorial debut in 1978 with MATERNALE, and has
since directed LA VIA DEGLI SPECCHI (starring Nicole
Garcia, 1982) and CALDO SUFFOCANTE (starring Christine
Boisson, 1990). She served as a member of the Film
Commission for the Italian Ministry of Culture.
GERARDO HERRERO
Born in Madrid in 1953, Gerardo Herrero studied law
and worked briefly as an attorney before deciding he
preferred the cinema. He founded his own production
company, Tornasol Films, which since 1986 has produced
films by such Spanish directors as Fel�pe Vega,
Francisco Regueiro and Mariano Barroso and participated
in international co-productions directed by, among
others, Alain Tanner, Tom�s Guti�rrez Alea and Ken
Loach. His own filmography includes: "El Curso de
las estrellas" (1984), "Fotogramas
salvajes" (1984), AL ACECHO (1987), "Ni
cont�go ni sin t�" (1991), DESV�O AL PARA�SO
(1994), MAL�NA ES UN NOMBRE DE TANGO (1996) and COMANCHE
TERRITORY (1997), showing at this years Montreal
World Film Festival.
MICHAEL WILMINGTON
Michael Wimington has been chief film critic of the
Chicago Tribune since 1993. Born in Wisconsin in 1946, he
studied at the University of Wisconsin and has taught at
UCLA, the University of Southern California and Cal Arts.
He currently teaches at the University of Chicago
Extension School. He was a film critic and reporter for
the Los Angeles Times from 1984 to 1993 and film critic
and senior writer for the Isthmus of Madison since 1980.
He has written on film and television for L.A. Style,
L.A. Weekly and Milwaukee Magazine. He was co-author,
with Joseph McBride, of the 1973 book "John
Ford", and has contributed extensively to such film
journals as Film Comment, Sight and Sound and Film
Quarterly.
