Igor est un jeune adolescent de quinze ans qui passe son temps entre la construction d'un kart avec ses copains et l'entreprise de bâtiment de son père Roger qui emploie des immigrés clandestins. Pour Igor, les combines du père font partie de l'ordre naturel des choses, une sorte d'équivalent au mal dans l'innocence de l'âge. Cette innocence, Igor va la perdre brutalement le jour où, avec Roger et sur ses ordres, ils laissent mourir Hamidou, un immigré africain, tombé accidentellement d'un échafaudage. Mais avant de mourir, Hamidou demande à Igor de lui promettre de protéger sa femme Assita et son fils Tiga, promesse qu'il fait à l'insu de son père. Commence alors pour Igor un lent éveil à la conscience morale, le tiraillement entre la peur, la fidélité filiale et l'exécution de sa promesse. De son côté, Assita, à qui l'on a caché la mort de son mari, continue d'attendre son retour et refuse de rentrer dans son pays... | LA PROMESSE
Igor, 15, spends most of his days either building a cart with his friends or working at his father's construction company, which is staffed largely with illegal immigrants. To Igor, his father's under-the-counter methods are simply part of the natural order of things, a kind of tolerated evil within the innocence of his age. Igor loses that innocence suddenly when, one day, Hamidou, an African worker, falls from a scaffold and is left for dead on the orders of his father. Before he expires, Hamidou makes Igor promise to protect his wife Assita and his son Tiga. Igor agrees without telling his father and he is soon caught in a moral dilemma, torn between fear and filial loyalty and the promises he made to Hamidou. Assita, who hasn't been told of her husband's death, keeps waiting for him and refuses to return to her native country... |
| Luc Dardenne est né en 1954 aux Awirs (Belgique). Licencié en philosophie, il est en 1982 assistant-réalisateur d'Armand Gatti sur le film NOUS ÉTIONS TOUS DES NOMS D'ARBRES. Depuis 1990, il dirige un atelier d'écriture scénaristique à l'Université Libre de Bruxelles.Jean-Pierre Dardenne est né en 1951 à Engis (Belgique). Comédien de formation, il a été entre 1972 et 1973 l'assistant d'Armand Gatti au théâtre. En 1975, il fonde avec son frère Luc la société de production Dérives qui a produit à ce jour plus de cinquante documentaires pour des télévisions européennes. Responsable d'un atelier de pratique audiovisuelle au sein de la section "Arts et Sciences" de l'Université de Liège depuis 1984, il fonde en 1994, toujours avec son frère Luc, Les Films du Fleuve. LA PROMESSE est leur troisième long métrage commun.
