Des survivants du camp de concentration d'Auschwitz nous racontent leur vécu après la Libération. Le film se compose de récits de rescapés et des archives filmées sur la Libération, les camps pour personnes déplacées, l'émigration légale et illégale vers la Palestine/Israël et la politique d'immigration restrictive des pays occidentaux. Ce matériel historique est en grande partie montré ici pour la première fois. Trois personnes parlent de leur existence après leur libération; leur point commun est d'avoir survécu comme enfants et adolescents aux camps de Theresienstadt et d'Auschwitz. Il s'agit de Gerhard Durlacher, qui a étudié la question de la survie en tant que sociologue et qui vit aujourd'hui à Haarlem, aux Pays-Bas, de Jehuda Bacon, professeur de peinture, à Jérusalem, en Israël, depuis 1958, également témoin au procès d'Eichmann, et enfin de Ruth Klüger, qui vécut avec sa mère en Allemagne jusqu'en 1948, à proximité d'un camp pour personnes déplacées, puis émigra aux États-Unis. Elle enseigne aujourd'hui la littérature allemande à Irvine, en Californie, et à Göttingen, en Allemagne. | JOURNEY INTO LIFE
For the survivors of the Holocaust, there was generally no home to return to after World War II. Whole families had been annihilated and the survivors were often the only ones left alive. Frequently - because the British refused to allow refugees into Palestine and because the immigration policies of most Western countries were highly restrictive - these survivors were obliged to spend years in Germany, the country they feared and hated, usually in Displaced Persons camps, until they were able to find a new home. With the aid of newly-edited archival footage, this film documents the stories of three Auschwitz survivors, German-born Gerhard Durlacher, Czech-born Yehuda Bacon and Austrian-born Ruth Klüger. All three were deported, as children, to the Theresienstadt camp before ending up in Auschwitz. Durlacher became a sociologist in Haarlem (Netherlands) where he has worked on the problems of survivors. Bacon is a painter and professor of art in Jerusalem and served as a witness at the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Klüger lived with her mother in Displaced Persons camps in Germany until 1948 when she emigrated to the U.S. Today she is a professor of German literature and lives in Irvine, California. |
| Né en 1942 à Heidelberg, en Allemagne, Thomas Mitscherlich étudie à l'académie du cinéma et de la télévision de Berlin, de 1966 à 1970. Par la suite, il devient chargé de cours à l'Université de Hanovre et à l'école des arts appliqués de Schwäbisch Gmünd. Depuis 1989, il occupe les postes de directeur artistique et d'administrateur à l'institut du cinéma et de la télévision de Brême. Parmi ses nombreuses réalisations soulignons: "Haus der Endlösung" (doc., 1967), DER KAMPF UM 11% (doc., 1971), FREIE SCHULE (doc. tv, 1978), VATER UND SOHN: DER UNTERGANG DER AG WESER (doc., 1984, coréalisé avec Gunther Hörmann), DIE DENUNZIANTIN (1993) et RUTH KLÜGER - WEITERLEBEN NACH EINER KINDHEIT IN AUSCHWITZ (doc., 1995).
| Born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1942, Thomas Mitscherlich studied at the Berlin Film and Television Academy from 1966 to 1970. He then taught at the University of Hanover and at the Technical Design College in Schwäbisch Gmünd before becoming director of the Bremen Institute of Film and Television in 1989. Among his films are: "Haus der Endlösung" (doc., 1967), DER KAMPF UM 11% (doc., 1971), FREIE SCHULE (tv doc., 1978), VATER UND SOHN: DER UNTERGANG DER AG WESER (doc., 1984, co-directed with Gunther Hörmann), DIE DENUNZIANTIN (1993) and RUTH KLÜGER - WEITERLEBEN NACH EINER KINDHEIT IN AUSCHWITZ (doc., 1995).
