| L'HOMME QUI DORT
Au bord d'une rivière, entre les collines, la petite ville de Hitosuji. Takuji revient d'un voyage en Amérique du Sud. Mais à peine rentré chez lui, il est victime d'un accident qui le maintient dans un état de sommeil inconscient. Des filles originaires de l'Asie du sud travaillent dans un snack-bar de l'endroit. Tia, l'une d'elles, a perdu son petit garçon, emporté par le courant d'une rivière. Kamimura, un ancien camarade d'école de Takuji, vient souvent visiter ce dernier pour se rappeler de vieux souvenirs. Tia fait la connaissance de Takuji, mais avec l'arrivée de l'été, l'esprit de celui-ci semble avoir quitté son corps. The village of Hitosuji in Japan's Gunma Prefecture lies along a river flowing out of the mountains. Beside the river is a hot spring, the "moon water" where villagers of all ages come to bathe. While most of the bathers are farmers and their families, the bedrock of the local economy, the village is also home to several immigrants and workers from other areas and other Asian countries. Things appear peaceful and bucolic but, like nature itself, beneath its tranquil surface Hitosuji is the scene of dramatic struggles of life and death. Takuji, son of Kiyoji and Fumi, lies unconscious in his parents' home, victim of an accident in the mountains. Wataru, a mentally handicapped youth of unusual sensitivity, comes to visit him as does Kanimura, an old schoolmate of Takuji. Also taking an interest in the comatose young man is Tia, a foreign barmaid whose own son died in a flood back in her own country. Despite their care and interest, however, Takuji's condition continues to deteriorate. When summer arrives, Takuji takes a turn for the worse. His family try to call Takuji's spirit back to his body, but to no avail. Takuji is dead. Or so it appears... |
| Né le 29 octobre 1945, Kohei Oguri étudie le théâtre à la Faculté de littérature de l'Université de Waseda. Il travaille ensuite comme assistant-réalisateur avec, notamment, Masahiro Shinoda et Kiriro Urayama, avant de se lancer dans la réalisation. Ses films ont tous été présentés au Festival des films du monde: LA RIVIÈRE DE BOUE (1981, en nomination aux Oscars pour le meilleur film étranger), POUR KAYAKO (1984, gagnant du prix Georges Sadoul) et L'AIGUILLON DE LA MORT (1990, prix de la FIPRESCI au Festival de Cannes).
| Born in Maebashi, Japan in 1945, Kohei Oguri studied theatre at the University of Waseda before embarking apprenticing with film directors Masahiro Shinoda and Kiriro Urayama. Oguri made his own directorial debut in 1981 with MUDDY RIVER, which was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar and won the silver prize at the Moscow Festival. He has since directed: FOR KAYAKO (1984, winner of the George Sadoul prize) and THE STING OF DEATH (1990, winner of the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes).
