Haifa, qui tire son surnom de sa ville bien-aimée, va et vient dans un camp de réfugiés palestiniens. Bien qu'étant le fou du village, il est le seul à savoir beaucoup de choses. Il est proche de la famille d'Abu Said, un ancien policier qui attend beaucoup des changements politiques qui s'annoncent et dont la femme, Oum Said, place tous ses espoirs sur la sortie imminente de prison de leur fils aîné Said. Elle lui cherche d'ailleurs une épouse pour lui assurer son avenir. Le fils cadet, Siad, est du type cynique et rebelle: il ne croit en rien. Quant à Sabah, leur fille de douze ans, elle voit l'avenir de façon romantique, cherchant à savoir bien à l'avance ce qu'il lui réserve. | HAIFA
Though he lives in Gaza, his name is Haifa and he keeps dreaming of returning to the city of the same name. He is the local fool but there are things that only Haifa knows. He knows Abu Said, a relative and former policeman who has high hopes for the new political situation in Gaza. Oum Said's hopes rest largely on the imminent release from prison of their eldest son Said. She seeks a bride for Said to secure his future. Their youngest son, Siad, is cynical and rebellious, refusing to believe in anything, while Sabah, their 12-year-old daughter is a romantic who searches the future for whatever it may hold in store for her. And Haifa keeps wandering the streets of Gaza seeing and knowing things. |
| De nationalité palestinienne, Rashid Masharawi est né à Gaza dans le camp de réfugiés Shati. Dès l'âge de huit ans, il travaille dans l'industrie du film en faisant de la construction, puis de la décoration et de la direction artistique. Il a déjà réalisé: "Jawaaz Safar" (Titre de voyage, 1986), "Al Malja" (L'Abri, 1988), "Iyaam taweela fee Gaza" (Longues journées à Gaza, doc., tv, 1991), DAR O DOUR (Le Prix du pain, doc., tv, 1990), "The Magician" (Le Magicien, 1992), HATTA ISAAR AKHAR (Couvre-feu, 1993) et WAITING (doc., tv, 1994). HAIFA a été présenté au Festival de Cannes cette année, dans la section "Un certain regard".
| Born in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza in 1962, Rashid Masharawi got an early start in the cinema when at the age of eight he worked on set construction and décor. Later, he graduated to artistic design and, in 1986, he made his directorial debut with a travel short entitled "Travel Document". He has since directed "The Shelter" (1989), DAR O DOUR (tv doc., 1990), LONG DAYS IN GAZA (tv doc., 1991), "The Magician" (1992), CURFEW (1993) and WAITING (tv doc., 1994).
