LES AFFINITÉS ÉLECTIVES

La comtesse Charlotte et la baron Édouard se retrouvent par hasard au bout de vingt ans. Ils s'étaient beaucoup aimés autrefois et décident maintenant de se marier. Ils s'installent dans la campagne toscane et se consacrent à leur amour et au réaménagement de leur domaine selon les critères scientifiques du début de ce XIXe siècle. Ils sont rejoints par l'architecte Otton, ami intime d'Édouard, et par Ottilie, filleule de Charlotte. Mais au cours de la lecture commune d'un traité sur les affinités électives dans la nature, leur attention est attirée par les inexplicables lois qui poussent deux couples de substances à se dissoudre et à échanger leurs partenaires. C'est ce qui se produit entre les quatre habitants jusqu'à ce qu'un enfant naisse, issu d'une nuit d'amour entre Édouard et Charlotte. Mystérieusement, il a les traits d'Ottilie et d'Otton. La progression parallèle de deux histoires d'amour est alors marquée de façon dramatique. 		ELECTIVE AFFINITIES

Countess Charlotte and Baron Edouard, once madly in love, meet by chance twenty years after having last seen each other. They decide to marry and devote their time to their relationship and the development of their land. The couple are joined by Otto (an architect and close friend of Edouard's) along with Charlotte's goddaughter, Ottilie. After a communal reading of a treatise on "elective affinities", the inexplicable law of chemistry that separates paired elements and makes them change partners, the two couples experience the same results. After a passionate night between Edouard and Charlotte, a child is born that mysteriously resembles Ottilie and Otton. This dramatically marks the parallel progression of the two love stories.
Vittorio est né le 20 septembre 1929, Paolo le 18 novembre 1931, à San Miniato da Pisa (Italie). Les deux frères fondent un ciné-club en 1950 avec Valentino Orsini et mettent en scène des spectacles au Teatro di Massa. Entre 1954 et 1959, ils travaillent sur de nombreux films comme assistants à la mise en scène ou scénaristes et réalisent plusieurs documentaires en collaboration avec Orsini. En 1960, ils collaborent avec Joris Ivens à la réalisation d'un téléfilm, L'ITALIA NON È UN PAESE POVERO. Leurs films en tant réalisateurs: UN HOMME À BRÛLER (1962, coll. The Taviani brothers were born in San Miniato da Pisa, Italy, Vittorio in 1929, Paolo in 1931. In 1950 they founded a film club in Pisa, began working as assistant directors or screenwriters and embarked on a long collaboration with Valentino Orsini on various documentaries. In 1960 they wrote the script for Joris Ivens' ITALY IS NOT A POOR COUNTRY and in 1962 they collaborated, for a final time, with Orsini on UN UOMO DA BRUCIARE. Since then they have built up a remarkable body of films, many of which were shown at the Montreal World Film Festival: I FUORILEGGE DEL MATRIMONIO (1963), I SOVVERSIVI (1967), UNDER THE SIGN OF THE SCORPION (1969), SAINT MICHAEL HAD A ROOSTER (1971), ALLONSANFAN (1974), PADRE PADRONE (1977, winner of numerous prizes including the Palme d'or at Cannes), IL PRATO (1979), THE NIGHT OF SAN LORENZO (1981), KAOS (1984), GOOD MORNING BABYLONIA (1987), IL SOLE ANCHE DI NOTTE (1990) and FIORILE (1993).
