LE VILLAGE DE MES RÊVES

Au Japon, Seizo et Yukihiko Tashima sont tous deux des auteurs populaires de livres illustrés travaillant indépendemment l'un de l'autre. Seizo, le cadet des jumeaux, est l'auteur d'un livre de souvenirs sur leur enfance campagnarde qui a servi de base à cette adaptation. Tous deux sont nés et ont grandi dans un petit village du district de Kochi, dans un cadre rustique et idyllique qui inspire encore aujourd'hui les styles si divers de leurs oeuvres. En 1948, ils sont en troisième année d'école primaire. Leur père, un pédagogue, est fonctionnaire dans l'administration, la mère est enseignante. Leur soeur aînée est au lycée. Dans le voisinage, les jumeaux ont une réputation de sales garnements. Dans leurs excès de débordement juvénile, ils détruisent par exemple les bougies des épouvantails à oiseaux dans les champs de légumes ou bien ils arrachent les feuilles des pieds de pommes de terre. Les saisons passent sans grands bouleversements particuliers dans une vie par ailleurs tranquille et bien ordonnée. Un jour, toutefois, les jumeaux dépassent les bornes avec l'une de leurs mauvaises plaisanteries, en blessant profondément des camarades d'origine plus modeste. À partir de là, ils commencent peu à peu à se créer leur propre univers. 		VILLAGE OF DREAMS

Twins Seizo and Yukihiko Tashima are award-winning picture book artists in Japan. They have different styles but share inspiration for their work in their childhood experiences in rural Japan. One late summer day Seizo visits his brother's studio. The two artists are to begin working on a book together. It will be based on the idyllic childhood they spent together in a provincial village. Their drawings sweep us back to 1948, to a rustic hamlet in the Kochi countryside. The boys are in third grade. They love to draw but have a reputation as pranksters and troublemakers; they trap eels in the river, chase birds in the woods and vandalize the fields of neighboring farmers. At school, where their mother teaches, they are puzzled by the cruel treatment meted out to Senji, a strange, dishevelled little boy who has taught them to catch catfish by hand and to blow a conch. Both twins fall ill and have their tonsils out. The village activities are observed by three elderly witches sitting in a tree and Seizo hears voices underwater. The boys imagine the thoughts of fish as they catch them and worry that the thunder god will steal their penises when they go naked. As the seasons progress, fantasy soon invades every corner of their daily existence.
Né en 1934 dans le district de Wakayama, Yoichi Higashi étudie la littérature à l'Université de Waseda. Collaborateur de la société de production Iwanami de 1954 à 1962, il devient, par la suite, cinéaste indépendant. Depuis, ses films reçoivent de nombreux prix au Japon. Born in the Wakayama district of Japan in 1934, Yoichi Higashi studied literature at Waseda University before launching his professional career in cinema with the Iwanami Production company in 1954. He began directing on his own in 1965, first with short films and then, in 1971, with features.
