Ce film raconte une époque cruciale de la vie d'Élie Wiesel, écrivain, Prix Nobel de la Paix. Élie Wiesel vit aujourd'hui à New York. Comme il le dit lui-même, il enseigne en anglais, écrit en français, mais rêve en yiddish et ne peut oublier qu'il est né à l'ombre des Carpates. Depuis la Transylvanie, en passant par Auschwitz et Birkenau, jusqu'à Buchenwald, le film accompagne Élie Wiesel tout au long du chemin qu'adolescent il a été forcé de parcourir, cinquante ans plus tôt. À travers ses monologues intérieurs, ses souvenirs évoqués sur un ton lyrique, le jeune garçon d'autrefois revit et fait partager au spectateur la tragédie et la souffrance de son terrible voyage. The film recounts a pivotal period in the life of Elie Wiesel, author and recipient of the Nobel Prize. Elie Wiesel lives in New York. Although he teaches in English and writes in French, he confesses that he still dreams in Yiddish and cannot help but remember that he was born in the shadow of the Carpathian Mountains. From Transylvania, through Auschwitz and Birkenau and on to Buchenwald, the film travels the same road Elie Wiesel was forced to walk half a century earlier, during his adolescence. Related in a lyrical tone, through intimate monologues and recollections, the film enables the 15-year-old boy to come alive again and the viewer to share the tragedy and pain of his extraordinary journey.
Née en 1937 à Budapest, et d'origine juive, Judit Elek est enfermée dans le ghetto de la même ville de mars 1944 à janvier 1945, date de l'arrivée des troupes soviétiques en Hongrie. Diplômée de l'École de cinéma de Budapest en 1961, elle tourne son premier court métrage en 1962. Elle a depuis réalisé de nombreux films, dont quelques documentaires. Sa filmographie comprend: "Rencontre" (1962), "Les Habitants du château" (1966), "Où finit la vie?" Born in Budapest in 1937, Judit Elek was incarcerated in the Budapest ghetto along with other Hungarian Jews during the Nazi occupation. In 1961 she graduated from the Budapest Film School, and with "Encounter" (1962), "Inhabitants of Castles" (1966) and others films quickly became one of the leading members of the Hungarian "cinéma direct". Elek's first feature, THE LADY FROM CONSTANTINOPLE (1968), won prizes in Hungary and was shown in festivals around the world. Among her other features are: WE'LL MEET IN 1972 (1971), A COMMONPLACE STORY (1974), MAYBE TOMORROW (1978), MARTINOVICS (1980), MARIA'S DAY (1983), MEMORIES OF A RIVER (1989) and THE AWAKENING (1994).
