| LE JUIF
Portugal 1739. | THE JEW
In Portugal of the 1730s, the Inquisition continues to exercise its fearful powers. Prosecuted and tortured by the Inquisition on suspicion of being Jewish, popular playwright António José da Silva is finally released and regains his will to live by re-immersing himself in the theatre. He marries Leonor Maria de Carvalho, like himself also a converted Christian, and wins support for his work in aristocratic circles. But an accusation of heresy against his cousin Brites Eugênia and the irreverent spirit of his comedies, lead da Silva back to the prisons of the Inquisition together with his wife and his mother, Lourença Coutinho. The punishment for the recurrence of heresy is death. Despite the intervention of King João V's secretary Alexandre de Gusmão and the doubts of young Dominican Dom Marcos, the prisoners are tortured. The trial becomes a test of strength between the King and the Chief Inquisitor, between the temporal powers of the State and the spiritual powers of the Church. The latter emerges victorious and on October 18, 1739 António José da Silva is burned at the stake. |
