La soixantaine avancée, Waluyo enseigne le chant et la danse traditionnels et dirige un orchestre. Parmi ses élèves, Ilalang et Bulan, tous deux dans la vingtaine, sont ceux pour qui il a une profonde admiration. Entre ces trois personnages, s'est établie une sorte de complicité faite de camaraderie et d'échanges artistiques et intellectuels. Ilalang est un jeune compositeur ambitieux qui a été marqué par une enfance traumatisante. En effet, son père voyait d'un très mauvais oeil la fidélité un peu trop marquée que l'enfant manifestait envers sa mère. Ilalang a donc grandi avec un vague sentiment de culpabilité. De son côté, aspirant à devenir danseuse professionnelle, Bulan décide d'unir tous ses efforts pour atteindre son objectif. Malgré son âge, Waluyo, celui qui a tout donné pour l'art, commence à réfléchir sur le sens de l'existence et se rend compte qu'il est comme la plupart des êtres humains. Il a besoin d'amour, de tendresse et d'affectiion. C'est ainsi qu'il tombe amoureux de Wulan, la principale chanteuse de l'orchestre. Mais avec la mort soudaine de Waluyo, la vie de tous ces personnages va changer du jour au lendemain. | ... AND THE MOON DANCES
Waluyo, a 68-year-old master of traditional Javanese arts, has two 25-year-old students: Ilalang, a young composer who has had a traumatic childhood, and Bulan, a dancer looking for her place in art and in life. The relationship that develops between them is a complex mixture of aesthetics and emotions. Bulan is a modern young woman who wants to maintain her independence but craves the appreciation of Waluyo and submits herself to her art. Ilalang has bitter memories of his domineering father and is haunted by a childhood accident in which his finger was pierced by a needle. He must overcome these traumatic memories in order to resume composing. Waluyo, meanwhile, reveals his own entirely human weaknesses in his affair with Wulan, a famous prima donna. All three must exorcise personal demons in their quest for identity. |
| Né en 1961, à Jogjakarta (Indonésie), Garin Nugroho étudie le cinéma à l'Institut des arts de Djakarta. En plus de son travail de réalisateur, il est écrivain et critique de cinéma pour des magazines locaux, et travaille dans le domaine de la télévision, particulièrement dans la réalisation de publicités et de documentaires. Sa filmographie comprend: "Water and Romi" (doc., 1989), LOVE ON A SLICE OF BREAD (1991), et LETTER FOR AN ANGEL (1994).
| Born in Jogjakarta, Indonesia in 1961, Garin Nugroho trained as a lawyer before deciding on a career in the cinema. After graduating from the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, he began directing documentaries and videos. His "Water and Romi" (1989) won prizes in Indonesia and Germany. He has directed two previous feature films: LOVE ON A SLICE OF BREAD (1991, winner of Best Film in the Indonesian Film Festival) and LETTER FROM AN ANGEL (1994, Best Picture at the Taormina Film Festival). Nugroho also writes on the cinema for newspapers and magazines and teaches at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts.
