Un autocar roulant en pleine campagne s'arrête pour faire descendre un des passagers. Il s'agit d'Ivo, homme dans la quarantaine, qu'on appelle affectueusement le "génie". Une fois hors du véhicule, il se dirige vers le village voisin, là où il a grandi. Il passera tout l'hiver dans la maison familiale pour échapper à sa solitude et essayer de mettre fin aux tourments qui le hantent. Pour passer le temps, il va couvrir les murs des maisons inoccupées de mots croisés et d'autres sortes de puzzles. Avide cruciverbiste, c'est à travers la solution de ces jeux de mots qu'il trouve des solutions à ses problèmes personnels. Mais contraint de faire face à la réalité, il se fait arrêter par les autorités locales qui voient d'un mauvais oeil ses agissements inusités. Sara, une travailleuse sociale, prend sa défense. Ivo tombe amoureux de la jeune femme. Uniquement par amitié, Sara l'invite chez ses parents qui habitent près de la mer. Là, Ivo fait la connaissance d'une faune de personnages dont Andrea, le fiancé de Sara. Mais afin de voir celle-ci plus souvent, le "génie" accepte de partager un appartement avec Antonino, Aldo, Silvano et Carlino, quatre excentriques qui ont autant de problèmes existentiels que leur camarade de chambre. Pour son anniversaire, Ivo organise une fête au cours de laquelle un incident viendra tout perturber. Mais Ivo n'est pas aussi naïf qu'on le pense. 		IVO THE GENIUS

A country road. A tall, fortyish man wearing knickerbocker trousers, sweater and beret gets off a bus. This is Ivo, affectionately known as "the genius", who walks with a funny gait toward the abandoned village where he grew up. There, in his decaying family house he spends a solitary winter. He fights his loneliness and angst by covering the walls of empty houses with crossword puzzles. Ivo loves crossword puzzles and they're also an emotional release for him. Come spring, Ivo is suddenly confronted with reality. A misunderstanding gets him arrested but he is quickly sprung by Fabio, a lawyer and twin brother of Sara, a pretty social worker for whom Ivo immediately develops a crush. Sara takes him under her wing and invites him to spend a weekend in her parents' house by the sea where he meets a motley cast of characters including Andrea, Sara's fiancé. In order to see Sara more often Ivo accepts to share a flat with Antonino, Aldo, Silvano and Carlino, four men who are as eccentric and insecure as he is. Ivo throws a party for his birthday and its consequences reverberate long after the candles are extinguished.
En 1972, avec un groupe de comédiens, Alessandro Benvenuti fonde une troupe qui se produit avec un succès retentissant autant à la scène qu'à la télévision. Entre 1981 et 1984, il scénarise et réalise deux longs métrages. Il joue également dans des films de Carlo Verdone, de Marco Risi et d'autres cinéastes italiens. Ses films sont: AD OVEST DI PAPERINO (1981), ERA UNE NOTTE BUIA E TEMPESTOSA (1984), BENVENUTI A CASA GORI (1990), ZITTI E MOSCA (1991), CAINO E CAINO (1992) et BELLE AL BAR (1994).
Alessandro Benvenuti began his professional career as an actor. In 1972 he co-founded a troupe of cabaret actors that starred on stage and television for most of the decade. In 1981 Benvenuti switched to filmmaking, writing and directing a couple of "cult" pictures and three mainstream features. Meanwhile, Benvenuti continued his acting career, starring in films by Marco Risi, Carlo Verdone and others. In 1994 he was awarded the Golden Ciak and Davide di Donatello prizes for his role in Simona Izzo's SENTIMENTAL MANIACS.
