La semaine sainte à Varsovie, en avril 1943. Dans des circonstances dramatiques, Irena Lilien, fille d'un professeur, parvient à s'échapper du ghetto juif en révolte. Ses parents ont été tués, elle n'a plus de foyer. Jan Malecki, un ami fidèle qu'elle n'a pas vu depuis longtemps, est prêt à la recueillir. En se rendant chez lui, elle est déjà victime de réflexions antisémites de la part des passants. Malecki lui-même ne désire pas être mêlé à ce "problème", surtout qu'il vient d'apprendre que la Gestapo a récemment fusillé plusieurs personnes ayant caché des Juifs. Sa femme Anna, par contre, une catholique dont la famille a péri à la guerre ou en camp de concentration, accueille volontiers Irena dans leur foyer. Les voisins réagissent avec une hostilité ouverte. La Piotrowska, qui fait du marché noir, demande au propriétaire de l'immeuble de mettre Irena dehors. Malecki a beaucoup de mal à le persuader de fermer les yeux sur cette affaire. Peu après, le mari de la Piotrowska profite de la détresse d'Irena pour essayer de la violer. Julek, le frère de Jan, et le fils du voisin Karski rejoignent les insurgés du ghetto pour les soutenir dans leur lutte pour la liberté. On ne les reverra plus. Pendant que le ghetto brûle, la vie quotidienne poursuit son cours habituel à Varsovie. Les gens se préparent à fêter Pâques... Qu'adviendra-t-il d'Irena? | HOLY WEEK
Warsaw, April 1943. Irena Lilien, a professor's daughter, succeeds in escaping the Warsaw Ghetto during the Jewish uprising. Her parents were murdered and now she is homeless. A close friend, Jan Malecki, whom she has not seen for a long time, agrees to shelter her but he is hesitant to get involved in the "problem", as he calls it, especially after he learns that several people who have hidden Jews in their homes have been arrested by the Gestapo. His wife Anna, a Catholic who has lost her own family in the war, is only too happy to have Irena live with them, but their neighbors are openly hostile. Black marketeer Piotrowska demands that the landlord evict Irena and it is only with great difficulty that Malecki manages to prevent the eviction. Piotrowska's husband, meanwhile, tries to take advantage of Irena's desperate predicament by attempting to rape her. Malecki's brother Julek and a neighbor's son, Karski, join the resistance and do not return. While the Ghetto burns, life in Warsaw continues as usual. The people prepare for Easter. Irena's already precarious situation will soon deteriorate even further. |

| Born in Suwalki, Poland in 1926, Andrzej Wajda studied painting in Cracow and directing at the Lodz Film School. He became Aleksander Ford's assistant and Ford returned the favor by serving as artistic supervisor on Wajda's first feature, A GENERATION (1954). Together with KANAL (1957) and ASHES AND DIAMONDS (1958), this formed a trilogy that established Wajda as a major director and marked a turning point in Polish cinema.
