Au cours d'un atelier pour jeunes comédiens, Aaron Gillespie, un professeur sadique, tyrannise ses élèves en les bafouant sans aucune retenue. À tel point que pour ce groupe de néophytes, le futur ne semble que désillusion, humiliation et exploitation de toutes sortes. Et à mesure que ces mauvais présages deviennent de plus en plus réels, leurs rêves s'effritent et tous sombrent dans la dépression. Mais le travail continue, et quand ils montent "The Phoenix of Dreams", le succès est tel que le rêve reprend forme et l'avenir paraît plus rayonnant. L'espoir ne meurt jamais... Aaron Gillespie presides over - and tyrannizes - a Hollywood acting school. The students have come to his class with dreams of stardom but what awaits them is mainly disillusion, humiliation and exploitation. Gillespie is the sadistic acting coach of legend, a man whose method entails the emotional dismemberment of his students before they can begin to receive his thespian gospel. But one of Gillespie's exercises is called "The Phoenix of Dreams" and, indeed, a dream of stardom does arise from the ashes of their hopes.
