Voici l'histoire de deux adolescents qui tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre et qui finissent par assumer leur sexualité dans une société qui a du mal à les comprendre. Au sud de Londres, dans la cité de Thamesmead écrasée par le soleil, trois adolescents se morfondent. Jamie est rejeté par ses camarades de classe et sèche ses cours. Ste se fait violemment maltraiter par son père et son frère. Quant à Leah, renvoyée du lycée, elle vit dans le monde de la musique de Mama Cass et des Mamas and Papas. Sandra, la mère de Jamie, généreuse et enjouée, cherche à comprendre son fils, se bat pour obtenir une promotion dans son travail, tout en essayant de maintenir une relation chaotique avec son drôle d'amant Tony. Pour échapper à la violence des siens, Ste trouve de plus en plus refuge chez Sandra où il partage la chambre de Jamie. A long and hot summer in South London. Jamie Gangel skips school and scurries back to the TV and the flat in the vast Thameshead estate where he lives with his mother Sandra. Next door lives Leah who has been kicked out of school and spends her days listening to the Mamas and Papas on record. Also in the same block is Jamie's classmate, Ste, sporty and athletic but who nevertheless receives regular beatings from his father and brother. One night, to escape the violence, Ste takes refuge in Sandra's flat and sleeps head to toe with Jamie. As Sandra struggles with job promotion and her relationship with her hippy-dippy boyfriend Tony, Jamie and Ste gradually discover their affection for each other. |
| Hettie MacDonald a étudié l'anglais à l'Université de Bristol avant de se joindre au Royal Court Theatre en 1985 en tant que stagiaire à la mise en scène. Sa carrière commence quand elle met en scène "The Normal Heart" au Albery Theatre. À vingt-quatre ans, elle était la plus jeune femme à avoir dirigé une pièce dans le West End de Londres. Parmi ses nombreuses mises en scène, on peut citer entre autres: "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Brighton Beach Memoirs", "A View from the Bridge", "Deathtrap", "A Doll's House" et "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
| Hettie MacDonald studied English at the University of Bristol before joining the Royal Court Theatre in 1985 as apprentice director. She quickly established her reputation by directing "The Normal Heart" at the Albery Theatre, making her, at 24, the youngest woman ever to have directed in London's West End. She has since directed a wide variety of classic and contemporary theatre, including: "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Brighton Beach Memoirs", "A View from the Bridge", "Deathtrap", "A Doll's House", "Three Sisters" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
