Dans le Mexique de la fin des années 30, l'inspecteur de police Castellón enquête dans un cabaret, Salón México, sur la mort mystérieuse d'une certaine Mercedes et de son amant Paco. À mesure que l'investigation progresse, d'autres clients de l'établissement nocturne semblent mêlés à cette affaire de moeurs, apparemment d'origine passionnelle. On les interroge, et chacun donne une version contradictoire de cet événement dramatique. À travers l'enquête de Castellón, on découvre l'atmosphère d'un milieu interlope et le mode de vie de ceux qui le fréquentent. | SALÓN MÉXICO
Mexico City in the 1930s. In Europe, fascism is spreading and the Depression is ravaging North America. In Paris they're dancing the tango and in Mexico, the "danzón". And the most popular place to be dancing the "danzón" is the Salón México. Located in downtown Mexico City, the Salón México is the watering hole for all classes of society and on any given night you may find composers (Aaron Copland), film stars (Emilio "El Indio" Fernández), Rumba dancers (aka "rumberas") and prostitutes. One night, Mercedes Altamirano, a "rumbera", has a fierce fight with her lover, Paco Morillo. From her dressing room, gunshots are heard and the club's customers decide it's time to leave. The next day, the police have closed down the club and Inspector Castellón is commissioned to find out exactly what happened and why. The investigation takes us, via flashback, on a tour of the life and times of the Salón México. |
| Né en 1952 à Mexico, José Luis García Agraz étudie au département d'études cinématographiques de l'Université de Mexico. Assistant de ses compatriotes Arturo Ripstein et José Estrada, il apprend le métier de réalisateur et tourne son premier court métrage en 1979. Sa filmographie comprend: "Háblame de Rita" (1979), "Patricio" (1981), NOCAUT (1982), EL TESORO DE LA DIOSA DE LA LUNA (1984), SUEÑOS DE ORO (1984), NOCHE DE CALIFAS (1985), YO TE AMO CATALINA (vidéo, 1986), "El último tren" (1987), "Saxofón" (1987), "Solamente una vez" (1988), "La secta de Sargón" (vidéo, un des sketches de TONY TIJUANA, 1989), "Ladrón de Sábado" (1990), BUSCANDO AL CULPABLE (vidéo, 1990), EL OTRO LADO DE LA LEY (vidéo, 1990), DENTRO DE LA NOCHE (vidéo, 1991) et DESIERTOS MARES (1993).
| Born in Mexico City in 1952, José Luis García Agraz studied film at the National University of Mexico and worked as an assistant to Arturo Ripstein and José Estrada before making his directorial debut in 1979 with "Háblame de Rita". Among the films he has made since are: NOCAUT (1982), EL TESORO DE LA DIOSA DE LA LUNA (1984), SUEÑOS DE ORO (1984), NOCHE DE CALIFAS (1985), YO TE AMO CATALINA (1986), "El último tren" (1987), "Saxofón" (1987), "Solamente una vez" (1988), "La secta de Sargón" (1989), "Ladrón de Sábado" (1990), BUSCANDO AL CULPABLE (1990), EL OTRO LADO DE LA LEY (1990), DENTRO DE LA NOCHE (1991) and DESIERTOS MARES (1993).
