La vieille ville de Jérusalem à la fin du siècle dernier. Rébecca est mariée à l'homme de son choix, Jacob de Elhanan, un rabbin de grande renommée, très versé dans la Cabale et le Zohar. Leur union est le symbole d'un amour profond et intense. Cependant, une ombre ternit leur bonheur, ils n'ont pas d'enfants. Après quinze années faites de tourment et d'angoisse, Rébecca s'adresse à une parente, Vida de Pinso. Celle-ci, veuve, vit pauvrement avec sa fille Sultana, âgée de dix-huit ans. Rébecca supplie Vida de donner Sultana en mariage à son mari Jacob, dans l'espoir que la jeune femme donnera un fils à ce dernier. Jacob ne se sent pas à l'aise avec la décision de sa femme et il s'y oppose. Mais quand il réalise que rien ne pourra la faire revenir sur ce choix, qu'elle agit par amour pour lui et par conviction religieuse, il se laisse fléchir et se rend aux arguments de son épouse. The Old City of Jerusalem at the end of the last century. Rebecca is married to a man of her choice, Jacob de Elhanan, a renowned rabbi, well-versed in the Kabbala and the Zohar. Their union is a manifestation of their profound and intense love. But a shadow falls across their happiness: they have no children. After fifteen years of torment and anguish, Rebecca appeals to a relative, Vida de Pinso. A widow, Vida lives in penury with her 18-year-old daughter Sultana. Rebecca implores Vida to give Sultana in marriage to her husband, Jacob, in the hope that the young woman will bear him a son. Jacob at first rejects Rebecca's idea, but when she persists, he comes to realize that she is acting out of deep love and religious conviction. Jacob acquiesces and marries Sultana. But the threesome doesn't quite work out according to Rebecca's plans. |
