Début juin 1985. La pêche au saumon vient d'être ouverte sur la grande rivière Nabessipi. Sur la plage déserte de Nutameham, près de l'embouchure, le biologiste Jean-Pierre Lafond étudie les rorquals, bélugas et autres mammifères marins, lorsque tout à coup son regard est attiré par une chaloupe renversée. Jean-Pierre appelle la police amérindienne et on retire de l'océan cette embarcation d'aluminium complètement cabossée. Au même endroit quelques jours plus tard, Dan Arsenault découvre le corps d'un jeune Indien, le visage tout ensanglanté. Il s'agit de Salomon Ishpatau, le copain d'Ulysse Lalo, frère de Roxane, la belle secrétaire du Conseil de bande. Six jours plus tard, Jean-Pierre et Roxane retirent des eaux le corps, lui aussi ensanglanté, d'Ulysse. Dans les deux cas, la police constate une mort accidentelle par noyade. Et pourtant aucun d'eux n'a d'eau dans les poumons. Avec l'aide de Roxane, Jean-Pierre veut faire éclater la vérité. Dans sa démarche, il s'oppose aux gardes-pêche et à l'Association des pêcheurs sportifs du village voisin blanc, à la brutalité policière et à la nonchalance du chef indien. Heureusement que chez les Blancs, Dan Arsenault, un entrepreneur en bâtiment, et le Père Philibert, en mission dans ce coin de pays depuis 30 ans, le comprennent et essaient tant bien que mal de le soutenir.... 		SILENCING THE GUNS

A warm, sunny morning in June, 1985. The salmon fishing season is opening for the people of the Maliotenam Reserve located on the Nabessipi River in northern Quebec. Jean-Pierre Lafond, a visiting marine biologist, is alone on the deserted beach looking for signs of whales. In the distance the sun reflects on a large object offshore. Jean-Pierre calls in the reserve police and they retrieve the wreckage of a small aluminum boat. A few days later, the bloodied corpse of Salomon Ishpatau, a young native, is also retrieved from the water. Jean-Pierre resume his research but there is something ominous in the air. Six days later this feeling is confirmed when another bloodied corpse, that of Ulysse Lalo, Salomon's friend, turns up in the water. The immediate tendency is to label the two deaths "accidental drownings" but this conclusion is not corroborated by the evidence. The two bodies have no water in their lungs. Jean-Pierre has come to the North to do research into whales but his sense of justice and his inquisitive nature lead him to search for answers to the mystery. This search forces him to confront the fishing wardens, the local "fishermen's club" and the police as well as his own attitudes as a white man. SILENCING THE GUNS takes us down the river into Jean-Pierre's own heart of darkness.
Né en 1928 à Saint-Mont (France), Arthur Lamothe émigre au Canada en 1953. Après ses études universitaires en économie politique à l'Université de Montréal, il entre au service des nouvelles de Radio-Canada à titre de recherchiste et rédacteur. Dès cette époque, il est intéressé au cinéma. En 1980, il devient le premier titulaire du prix Albert-Tessier. Ses principaux films sont: "Bûcherons de la Manouane" (1962), "La neige a fondu sur la Manicouagan" (1965), POUSSIÈRE SUR LA VILLE (1965), CE SOIR-LÀ, GILLES VIGNEAULT... Born in Saint-Mont, France in 1928, Arthur Lamothe emigrated to Canada in 1953. After studying political economics at the University of Montreal, he began working as a researcher on public affairs shows, wrote about the cinema for such magazines as Cité Libre and Liberté and co-founded the magazine Images. In 1959 he co-founded the Montreal International Film Festival. In 1962 he joined the National Film Board of Canada and has since gone on to become one of the country's preeminent documentarists, specializing in films about northern Quebec and its native people.
