À dix-sept ans, Shelly est la meilleure élève de sa classe dans la petite ville du Texas où elle habite avec sa soeur Tanya (14 ans) et sa belle-mère Ruby. Shelly espère décrocher une bourse pour aller à l'université dès l'année prochaine. Cependant, elle pense souvent à son père Carl qui s'est enfui au Mexique il y a deux ans afin d'échapper aux autorités qui le recherchent pour une question de drogue. Elle se souvient des encouragements et des conseils qu'il lui prodiguait lorsqu'elle était enfant, mais aussi de la manière dont il abusait d'elle de façon répétée. Ces souvenirs sont mêlés à des scènes imaginées où elle se voit en train de le punir pour ce qu'il lui a fait. Aujourd'hui, Shelly est une fille populaire mais elle ne sort pas avec des garçons, si on fait exception de Raymond, dont elle s'est fait un ami intime. Mais Carl revient à la maison et quand il lui parle, il parvient à lui faire douter de tout. Des forces explosives sont en jeu où la violence et la peur ont un rôle essentiel. Shelly, 17, is at the top of her high school class in a small Texas town and planning to attend college next year on a full scholarship. But as perfect as everything looks on the outside, inside Shelly is dying. She lives with her 14-year-old sister Tanya and her stepmother Ruby. She sneaks cigarettes and alcohol and is often lost in memories of her father, Carl, who has been in Mexico for two years, hiding from the narcotics police. She remembers the love she felt as a small girl looking for his approval and encouragement. But she also remembers vividly how he abused her. Her memories are intermingled with graphic fantasies of punishing him, of making him feel the same fear and pain he caused her. In her father's absence, Shelly has tried to make a life for herself. Though popular, she doesn't date and her only close friend is Raymond, one of the few Black kids in town. Shelly also takes on a great deal of responsibility for Tanya, who is a handful. As graduation nears, Shelly begins to imagine freedom, a sense of life being different. Until her father returns home... |
| Détenteur d'une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l'American Film Institute grâce à son court métrage "Belle", Peter Kiwitt a été réalisateur et scénariste de quelques épisodes de téléséries et a été professeur au Emerson College. SILENT LIES est son premier long métrage.
| Peter Kiwitt earned his Master of Fine Arts from the American Film Institute with his short film, "Belle". After graduation he worked as a writer and director on several television serials and as a film instructor at Emerson College. SILENT LIES marks his debut in features.
