LES CAPRICES D'UN FLEUVE

En 1787, la France frissonne déjà d'une révolution inéluctable. Le Siècle des Lumières s'enflamme. La noblesse a d'autres préoccupations. Pour avoir tué l'ami du Roi, Jean-François de la Plaine est banni du royaume, loin de Louise, la femme qu'il aime. Il est exilé sur les côtes d'Afrique comme Gouverneur d'une minuscule colonie, un comptoir de sable livré aux caprices d'un fleuve. La sensualité, la violence, l'amour ont ici d'autres parfums. Le voici confronté à lui-même, à une autre culture, à d'autres dangers. Le voici au coeur de la traite, des trafics, de l'esclavage, des guerres tribales. C'est en s'enfonçant dans les méandres de ce fleuve imprévisible, au centre de l'Afrique du XVIIIe siècle, au rythme d'un voyage tumultueux et incertain, que Jean-François va vivre sa propre révolution et tentera de faire l'éloge de la différence. 		THE WHIMS OF A RIVER

It's 1787 and France is ripe for revolution. The Age of Enlightenment has been lit. But the nobility have other concerns. Jean-François de la Plaine is banished from the kingdom for having killed the King's friend in a duel. Leaving his beloved Louise behind in France, Jean-François is exiled to the African coast where he is to govern a tiny colony, a trading post on the banks of a capricious river. In this exotic environment, sensuality, violence and love have different fragrances. Here he is plunged into a society dominated by tribalism and the slave trade. The salons and balls of Paris are a world away. So is the impending Revolution. As he travels deeper into the dark heart of the land, however, along the meandering and unpredictable river, Jean-François will learn about tolerance and differences between men even before a copy of the Declaration of Human Rights will have reached African shores.

Born in 1947, Bernard Giraudeau first established his reputation in films as an actor. Among his better-known roles were those in VIENS CHEZ MOI, J'HABITE CHEZ UNE COPINE (Patrice Leconte, 1980), LA BOUM (Claude Pinoteau, 1981), CROQUE LA VIE (Jean-Charles Tacchella, 1981), RUE BARBARE (Gilles Béhat, 1984), POUSSIÈRE D'ANGE (Édouard Niermans, 1987), LA REINE BLANCHE (Jean-Loup Hubert, 1990), APRÈS L'AMOUR (Diane Kurys, 1991), UNE NOUVELLE VIE (Olivier Assayas, 1992), LE FILS PRÉFÉRÉ (Nicole Garcia, 1994) and RIDICULE (Patrice Leconte, 1996). In 1989 he made his debut behind the camera, directing the TV film, LA FACE DE L'OGRE. He has since directed L'AUTRE (1990), UN ÉTÉ GLACÉ (TV, 1991) and "La Transamazonienne" (doc., 1992).
