Les rites entourant les funérailles coréennes traditionnelles sont ici montrés d'une manière nouvelle. Bien que le film semble vouloir uniquement parler de la mort dans un contexte culturel, ses thèmes sont plutôt ceux plus véritablement universels de la vie et de la nature humaine. Un homme meurt dans un petit village, mais à ses funérailles, la mort et le deuil sont mis de côté devant l'ampleur d'une célébration de la vie et de ses émotions diverses: amour, haine, jalousie, ambition, cupidité, mais aussi remords et pardon. Le processus du deuil réside finalement dans l'établissement d'une sorte de parallélisme entre la tradition et la modernité. Alors que les parents se regroupent à Séoul, Pusan et même Chicago, leurs attitudes modernes se heurtent aux traditions ancestrales des villageois et ce conflit entre deux univers très différents accentue la force de l'agitation de la vie sur la solennité de la mort. | FAREWELL, MY DARLING
This film attempts to view the traditional Korean funeral rites in a more light-hearted fashion. Although the film initially seems to concern itself with the subject of death in a cultural context, its themes are really the more universal ones of life and human nature. A man dies in a small village and at his funeral death and mourning are all but forgotten as the ceremony becomes a celebration of life and all its turbulent emotions - love, hate, jealousy, ambition and greed, as well as repentence and forgiveness. The process of mourning becomes merely an attempt to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. As relatives gather from Seoul, Pusan and even Chicago, their contemporary manners clash with the ingrained traditions of the villagers. The contrast between the villagers and the mourners from the big cities highlights the conflict between modern ways and tradition in an ancient culture. The turbulence of life overpowers the solemnity of death. |
| Né en 1948 dans la province du Kyong-Buk (Corée du Sud), Chul-Soo Park termine ses études à l'Université Sung Gyun-Gwan en 1972. Sept ans plus tard, il réalise son premier long métrage. Producteur de télévision et chargé de cours, il s'intéresse particulièrement au rôle de la femme dans la société coréenne en évolution. Sa filmographie comprend, entre autres: NIGHT TRAIN (1979), STRAY DOGS (1980), BELL FOR NIRVANA (1984), TODAY'S WOMAN (1987), THE WOMAN'S WHO WALKS ON WATER (1990), SEOUL'S EVITA (1991) LOVE IN OUR TIMES (1994) et 301-302 (1995, également présenté au Festival des films du monde cette année).
| Born in Kyong-Buk province, South Korea in 1948, Chul-Soo Park graduated from Sung Gyun-Gwan University in 1972. He made his first feature, NIGHT RAIN, in 1979 and has worked in television producer and lectured on the cinema. His directorial credits include: STRAY DOGS (1980), BELL FOR NIRVANA (1984), A MOTHER (1985), TODAY'S WOMAN (1987), MY HOLLYHOCK FLOWER (1988), THE WOMAN'S WHO WALKS ON WATER (1990), SEOUL'S EVITA (1991), LOVE IN OUR TIMES (1994) and 301-302 (1995), which is also being presented at this year's World Film Festival.
