Jo vient de se séparer de Mark, son amour de jeunesse, et elle est retournée vivre avec leur petite fille chez ses parents. L'atmosphère y est insupportable. Jo voudrait venir en aide à sa soeur Andrea, droguée impénitente, mais tout l'argent qu'elle lui donne ne sert qu'à se procurer de la came. Jo travaille pour un salaire de misère dans une entreprise de repassage qui exploite tout son personnel. Impossible de trouver un meilleur emploi, surtout pour une mère célibataire. Mais les choses vont changer. En bluffant un peu, Jo obtient un logement social (ils sont très rares et très demandés). Elle s'efforce par ailleurs d'avoir une place aux cours du collège. De nouvelles possibilités semblent s'offrir à elle et il y a même quelqu'un pour partager ses joies, Kevin. Le hic, c'est que Kevin est marié... Et Jo tombe enceinte. Quand elle en parle à sa mère, celle-ci lui conseille d'avorter. Mais Jo a confiance en Kevin qui assure vouloir quitter sa femme et elle veut avoir cet enfant de lui. En apprenant la nouvelle cependant, Kevin se révèle sous un autre jour: il n'est pas disposé à se laisser avoir de la sorte! Pour Jo, c'est alors le début d'une dégringolade dans un chaos sans fin. | STREETLIFE
Jo is a lively young woman with a little girl, Lily. She is separated from Lily's father, her childhood sweetheart, the drippy Mark. She lives with her abusive father, Terry, but her true allegiance lies with her mother Lynwen. She also has a sister Andrea, a junkie to whom Jo is forever slipping money to feed her habit. She scrapes a living doing other people's ironing with a group of other women in a local sweatshop. Jo is trying to get her life together. She manages to get rehoused by pulling a scam involving a city engineer and a leaky water tank and gets her own place on the council estate. She is also trying to get herself into a college course. Life is good and she now has a man to share it with, albeit a married one, the smooth-talking Kevin. Then Jo discovers that she's pregnant. Lynwen tells her that this is not a world to bring children into, but Jo wants the baby, because Kevin has promised to leave his wife and move in with her. But Kevin starts to mess her around and Lynwen is taken ill. The pressure begins to build on Jo. |
| Né au Pays de Galles en 1942, Karl Francis a travaillé à partir de 1970 pour la télévision britannique, entre autres comme scénariste et réalisateur de documentaires indépendant. Il tourne ses propres films depuis 1975. | Born in Bedwas, Wales in 1942, Karl Francis studied at Manchester University, the Slade School of Fine Art and the Hornsey Art and Film School. He began making documentaries in the early '70s and features a few years later. Since 1994 he has been working for BBC Wales.
