Ils n'ont ni boulot, ni avenir, et ils ne sont pas très futés. Mais ils sont amis depuis toujours, et conscients que la vie défile devant eux à grands pas et que rien d'intéressant ne leur arrive dans la petite ville sortie tout droit de leur imagination, Palookaville. Pour se faire un peu d'argent, ils proposent à des personnes âgées de les conduire chez eux en voiture privée, à leur sortie des super-marchés. Mais l'idée ne marche pas. Sid, Russ et Jerry se retrouvent donc au petit restaurant qu'ils fréquentent habituellement, parlant de tout et de rien. Et voici que l'un d'eux a une idée: pourquoi ne pas dévaliser la bijouterie du coin? Le jour du grand événement, ils s'aperçoivent d'une "petite" erreur de calcul. Au lieu de la bijouterie, ils se retrouvent dans la boulangerie du coin. Mais plus tard, la chance semble leur sourire lorsqu'un camion de sécurité plein d'oseille fait une embardée non loin de l'endroit où ils se trouvent. Le chauffeur a sans doute eu une crise cardiaque. Comme ce sont de bons garçons, ils décident de l'emmener à l'hôpital, pour ensuite rendre le camion à son propriétaire. Mais cet incident donne au trio des idées pour un coup beaucoup plus fructueux... Malheureusement, en visionnant "Armored Car Robbery", un petit polar, Sid, Russ et Jerry n'ont pas saisi le message du film, à savoir que rien n'arrive vraiment comme prévu, même si ce que ça rapporte peut être obtenu de façons, parfois, assez surprenantes. | PALOOKAVILLE
They have no jobs. They have no future. And they're not that smart. Basically, they're just three palookas in a small East Coast town. But they do have each other... and a plan to pull off the perfect heist. Sid, Russ and Jerry have been friends since childhood. Now adults, they while away their time hanging out at a local diner and discuss their lives with a constant sense of frustration. Over cups of coffee they hatch an endless series of get-rich-quick schemes which never seem to pan out. Crime looks to be the only solution to their problems. "I'm not talking about a life of crime," says Russ. "I'm talking about a momentary shift in lifestyles; a little itty bitty alteration. You understand?" But the perfect heist is easier planned than executed. The getaway car survives its test drive, the power tools are ready for action, the ski masks are set and the toy guns have been spray-painted. But life in Palookaville is always unpredictable and just when they think they've finally made it as bad guys, fate begs to differ. |
| C'est en visionnant sa thèse de maîtrise, le court métrage "That Burning Question", que Uberto Pasolini et Playhouse International Pictures s'intéressent à Alan Taylor. Par la suite, Alan Taylor réalise de nombreux vidéoclips pour Polygram, dont "Tempting", "These Boots" et "Summer". Il a également signé quelques épisodes de la série "Homicide" pour NBC. Avec PALOOKAVILLE, Alan Taylor réalise son premier long métrage de fiction.
| Alan Taylor graduated from New York University in 1990 with "That Burning Question" as his thesis film. The short won the Mobil Award for Best Graduate Film and came to the attention of producer Uberto Pasolini who decided Taylor was just right as the director of his new project. Taylor has also directed several music videos for Polygram, including "Tempting", "These Boots" and "Summer", and numerous episodes of the NBC TV series "Homicide". PALLOOKAVILLE is his first feature.
