Les personnages du film sont fabriqués à partir de l'imagination du scénariste qui, dans la vraie vie, a connu et côtoyé pendant dix ans des individus menant un genre de vie à la "boozecan". Pour ceux qui ne le savent pas, un "boozecan" est un établissement nocturne où l'on sert des boissons alcoolisées après les heures régulières. La clientèle est particulièrement composée du personnel de l'établissement, de quelques oiseaux de nuit, de strip-teaseuses, de motards... et même de gens exerçant des professions libérales: des docteurs, des avocats, des athlètes et des artistes. Pasqua, le personnage principal, fréquente souvent cet endroit, une façon comme une autre de voir son rêve (avoir son propre "boozecan") se réaliser. Mais comme chez tous les rêveurs, les choses qui lui arrivent le ramènent toujours à la réalité. Ainsi, chaque fois que Pasqua avance d'un pas, un événement le fait reculer de deux... | BOOZECAN
Blind pigs. Paid house parties. Out in the midst of slumbering suburbia and through dark, shadowy downtown alleyways, something's stirring. Behind the oily 3 a.m. blackness of industrial malls, something is alight. A "boozecan" is an illegal, after-hours drinking club. Its clientele ranges from bikers, strippers and night hawks to doctors, lawyers, sports stars and showbusiness types. Pasqua, the Italian-Canadian hero of the film defies cultural norms and tries to establish himself by running boozecans. He uses the boozecan as a way of realizing his life-long dream - owning his own bar. But every time he comes close to attaining his goal, something happens. Boozecans thrive in the urban underbelly where behavior is no longer restricted by social norms. Every time Pasqua takes one step forward, something forces him two steps back. |
| Né à Toronto et élevé à Montréal, Nicholas Campbell a fait ses études à l'Université Queen's, à Kingston, en Ontario. Comédien de réputation internationale, on a pu le voir dans THE NAKED LUNCH de David Cronenberg. Il a aussi joué dans des films de Richard Attenborough et de William Friedkin, ainsi que dans les épisodes des téléséries "The Insiders" et "Diamonds" qu'il a lui-même réalisées. Avant BOOZECAN, Nicholas Campbell a réalisé STEPPING RAZOR - RED X, un documentaire sur la vie et la mort de Peter Tosh, héros jamaïcain, virtuose du reggae.
| Born in Toronto, raised in Montreal and educated at Queen's University in Kingston, Nicholas Campbell began his film career in England. After a stint at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, he won roles in THE OMEN, and A BRIDGE TOO FAR and in a TV production of COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA (opposite Laurence Olivier and Joanne Woodward). In the '80s, Campbell worked in television and features, in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, playing for Richard Attenborough, William Friedkin and David Cronenberg. His long interest in directing was rewarded with the opportunity to direct episodes from the TV series in which he appeared. In 1992 he had his directorial debut in features with STEPPING RAZOR - RED X (shown at the World Film Festival).
