Au début des années 70, Bess, une jeune femme naïve qui vit dans une petite communauté sur la côte nord-ouest de l'Écosse, tombe amoureuse de Jan, un homme qui a l'expérience du monde et travaille sur une plate-forme pétrolière. Malgré l'opposition de leur entourage, ils se marient. Jan retourne sur sa plate-forme tandis que Bess compte les jours jusqu'à son retour, convaincue que leur amour est béni des dieux, d'autant plus qu'elle est persuadée de communiquer avec Dieu. Lorsque Jan est victime d'un accident et reste paralysé, il redoute que Bess ne se prive d'une existence normale. Cloué au lit, Jan réussit à la convaincre qu'elle peut l'aider à guérir en prenant un amant et en lui racontant ses ébats. | BREAKING THE WAVES
In the early '70s Bess, a naive, deeply religious girl living in a small fishing village on the northwest coast of Scotland, falls in love with oil-rig worker and man-of-the-world Jan. Despite local opposition, they marry. Jan returns to the rig while Bess counts the days to his homecoming, sure that their love is made in heaven, especially as she is convinced that she can mentally communicate with God. When an accident renders Jan paralyzed, he is worried that Bess will cut herself off from a normal life. Realizing that he will be bedridden, he convinces her that she will aid his recovery by taking a lover and relating to him their sexual acts. |
| Né au Danemark en 1956, Lars von Trier étudie à l'École nationale de cinéma du Danemark. Par la suite, il signe de nombreux spots publicitaires avant de réaliser THE ELEMENT OF CRIME, son premier long métrage de fiction, gagnant de nombreux prix à Cannes, Chicago et Manheim. En 1987, EPIDEMIC est bien reçu à Cannes, mais c'est EUROPA (1991, programmé au Festival des films du monde) qui lui vaut le Grand Prix Spécial du jury au Festival de Cannes, et des récompenses à Stockholm, Porto Rico et en Belgique. Auparavant, en 1988, von Trier met en scène MEDEA (d'après un scénario de Carl Th. Dreyer) pour la télévision. Il obtient le Prix Jean d'Arcy. En 1994, il signe LE ROYAUME, présenté l'an dernier au Festival des films du monde. Cette année, BREAKING THE WAVES a remporté le Grand Prix du Jury au Festival de Cannes.
| Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1956, Lars von Trier studied at the National Film School of Denmark and directed some 40 commercials before making his international breakthrough in 1984 with his debut feature, THE ELEMENT OF CRIME, which won prizes in Cannes, Chicago and Mannheim. Von Trier's EPIDEMIC (1987) was also well received at Cannes, but it was EUROPA (1991, shown at the World Film Festival) that earned him greatest acclaim, winning the Special Jury Prize in Cannes. In 1988 he directed MEDEA (from a screenplay by Carl Dreyer) and in 1994 THE KINGDOM (shown at last year's WFF), both for television. BREAKING THE WAVES won the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Festival.
