Ce sont les histoires d'abord successives, finalement et tragiquement entremêlées, du commis-voyageur Mateo Strano, de retour auprès de sa femme Maria, après une longue absence, du célèbre professeur d'anthropologie Georges Vickers, tombé dans la mendicité et amoureux d'une "maîtresse" de Pigalle, Tania, du puissant homme d'affaires Luc Allamand, pris au piège d'un énorme mensonge devenu réalité... Ces trois histoires, entre cauchemar et comédie, n'en forment qu'une, parce que ces trois hommes ne sont en réalité qu'un seul, affligé du syndrome connu de la "personnalité multiple". Et s'il dispose ainsi de trois vies - au moins il n'a comme tout le monde qu'une seule mort. Three stories of three different people: Mateo Strano, a travelling salesman, who returns to his wife Maria after a mysterious, 20-year absence; Georges Vickers, once a rich and famous professor of anthropology at the Sorbonne, now a homeless street tramp, who is in love with Tania, a Pigalle hooker; and Luc Allamand, a business tycoon who has invented a fictitious family for the sake of appearances and now finds they are coming to visit. These three stories, fluctuating between nightmare and comedy, are really just one, since the three protagonists are actually the same character - a man afflicted with a multiple personality disorder. But if this man has three lives, he can still only have a single death... |
| Né au Chili en 1941, Raul Ruiz a fait des études de théologie, de droit et de sociologie en Argentine. Par la suite, il rédige des scénarios pour la télévision mexicaine, devient professeur à New York et directeur de la Maison de la culture au Havre. Il a écrit plusieurs pièces de théâtre avant de réaliser ses films qui, presque tous, jonglent avec l'imagination, démontent les conformismes et mélangent les genres. Il s'est ainsi créé un univers particulier, insolite. | Born in Chile in 1941, Raul Ruiz studied theology and law in Argentina, wrote scripts for Mexican TV, taught in New York, ran the Maison de la Culture du Havre in France and wrote extensively for the theatre before launching his prolific career in the cinema.
