Cette adaptation du célèbre roman homonyme de Kurt Vonnegut raconte le récit de Howard W. Campbell Jr., écrivain américain qui a vécu en Allemagne à la veille de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, et qui reçoit une mission très secrète du gouvernment américain. Le mandat est simple: il doit assumer le rôle d'un sympathisant de la doctrine nazie. Campbell devient ainsi un des plus importants porte-parole de la propagande antisémite et du sentiment national à l'encontre des Américains, politiques promulguées par le national-socialisme. Par conséquent, il gagne des fidèles en Allemagne et produit de nombreux détracteurs aux États-Unis. MOTHER NIGHT suit les mésaventures hallucinantes de cet espion inavoué. Arrêté après la guerre par les Américains, il est persécuté en tant que traitre à la nation, mais considéré comme un héros par les néo-nazis. Howard W. Campbell Jr., an American writer living in pre-World War II Germany, is pressed into service by the U.S. government on a top-secret assignment. His mission: to assume the role of a Nazi sympathizer. With his true purpose known only by a few, Campbell becomes a prominent spokesman for the Nazis' anti-American and anti-Semitic agenda, gaining celebrity in Germany and infamy back home. Shifting back and forth in time, from Germany in the '30s and '40s to New York and Israel in the early '60s, MOTHER NIGHT follows Campbell's increasingly nightmarish misadventures when, years after the war, he is suddenly recognized, then all at once prosecuted by the U.S. authorities as a traitor, embraced as a hero by the neo-Nazis and ultimately imprisoned in Israel and ordered to stand trial as a war criminal. Campbell struggles desperately to prove that he was really a U.S. spy. |
| Né dans le quartier du Bronx, à New York, en 1961, Keith Gordon commence à travailler dans le domaine du cinéma en tant qu'acteur pour la télévision et le cinéma. On le voit notamment dans JAWS 2 (1978), ALL THAT JAZZ (1979) et DRESSED TO KILL (1980). Gordon a également rédigé le scénario de STATIC en 1985 et trois ans plus tard, en 1988, il tourne THE CHOCOLATE WAR, son premier long métrage de fiction, qu'il a adapté lui-même du roman de Robert Cormier. Ses autres réalisations sont: A MIDNIGHT CLEAR (1992) et des épisodes des téléséries "Wild Palms" (1993) et "Homicide" (1993).
| Born in the Bronx, New York in 1961, Keith Gordon got his start in the movies as a teen actor, first in the theatre then television and finally movies. After a bit part in JAWS 2 (1978), he played in Bob Fosse's ALL THAT JAZZ (1979) and, in what is probably his best known role, the quick-witted young hero of Brian De Palma's DRESSED TO KILL (1980). Gordon had long set his sights on making movies and after producing and writing the screenplay for STATIC in 1985, he got his chance in 1988, directing THE CHOCOLATE WAR from Robert Cormier's novel (which he adapted himself). He has since directed A MIDNIGHT CLEAR (1992, it made the "top ten" lists of several critics), segments of the "Wild Palms" TV mini-series (1993) and episodes from "Homicide" (1993).
