Une mère énorme et débordante de tendresse, un père muré dans son silence et sa fatigue, un grand-père lubrique, un frère culturiste, une soeur épileptique, une autre obèse: telle est la famille de Léolo, un gamin des quartiers pauvres de Montréal. Par chance, la découverte de la lecture lui permet de s'évader de ce triste quotidien et de devenir, plus tard, un écrivain qui se penche avec nostalgie sur son passé... Lauzon ne cherche pas à apitoyer, mais bien au contraire, à montrer avec beaucoup de tendresse cet univers familial sinistre transfiguré par la poésie des images. | LÉOLO
Young Léo lives with his vast and awesomely maternal mother and his thoroughly dysfunctional family in a Montreal slum. He hates his father so much that he has created a fantasy in which his mother was somehow impregnated by a tomato from Sicily, which carried the sperm of the man he imagines was his real father. Léo insists he is really Italian and should therefore be called Léolo. With most of his family either in the madhouse or headed that way, however, Léolo must keep certain secrets to himself and fantasy becomes an escape and a tonic. |
