Octogénaires, Mildred et Bob ont décidé de se retirer à la campagne, dans l'Ontario. Ils vivent près de la rivière, possèdent un jardin qu'ils adorent cultiver et se sont fait de nouveaux amis. Bref, ils savourent la vie au jour le jour. Mais avec le changement des saisons, leur santé se détériore. C'est ainsi que les docteurs diagnostiquent un cancer chez Mildred et que Bob a un e crise cardiaque pour la cinquième fois. Des séjours à l'hôpital et de fréquents soins à domicile remplacent les joies simples du jardinage. Mais petit à petit Mildred et Bob acceptent leur condition physique et apprivoisent leur propre mortalité. C'est la passion pour la vie qui les aide à surmonter les temps difficiles. Durant deux longues et difficiles années, la cinéaste Dorothy Todd Hénaut a filmé sespropres parents. Mildred and Bob are retired octogenarians who live in rural Ontario. With the river by their doorstep, a beloved garden and new friends, they savor life in daily rations. But just as the seasons change, so does their health. Mildred is diagnosed with cancer. Bob has a fifth heart attach. Hospital stays and home care now take precedence over mulching the garden. Gradually, Mildred and Bob accept the physical indignities, and their own mortality. Their passion for living carries them through the difficult times. Over a critical two-year period, their daughter, filmmaker Dorothy Todd Hénaut, films their life. The result is a candid, intimate look at the human aging process. |
| C'est en 1968 que Dorothy Todd Hénaut commence à
travailler à l_Office national du film en tant que recherchiste
pour le programme «Change for Change», une série
visant à produire des films sur les changements sociaux.
Depuis, elle a produit et réalisé de nombreux films
pour l_ONF, notamment le documentaire controversé de Bonnie
Sherr Klein, NOT A LOVE STORY: A FILM ABOUT PORNOGRAPHY (1982).
Parmi ses films: «The New Alchemist» (1974), «Sun,
Wind and Wood» (1977), «Horse-Drawn» (1979), «Firewords»
(1986), «A Song for Quebec» (1988) et «Heartbeats»
(1992).
| Dorothy Todd Hénaut joined the National Film Board in 1968
as a research-writer for Challenge for Change, a program using
media as a tool in social change. Since then she has produced
and directed numerous films in various departments of the NFB.
She produced Bonnie Sherr Klein_s controversial documentary, NOT
A LOVE STORY: A FILM ABOUT PORNOGRAPHY in 1982. Among the films
she has directed are: (1986), "The New lchemists" (1974),
"Sun, Wind an Wood" (1977), "Horse-Drawn Magic"
(19790, "Firewords" (1986), "A Song for Quebec"
(1988) and "Heartbeats" (1992).
