Since its origins more than fifty years ago, the Festival has continued to focus exclusively on director's 1st and 2nd feature films. Some, eventually becoming world famous filmmakers, had their debut features showcased at Mannheim before receiving public recognition in their own countries and prestigious invitations to Cannes, Venice and/or Berlin later on in their careers. For example, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Alain Resnais, Franï¿½ois Truffaut, Agnï¿½s Varda, Jiri Menzel, Krzysztof Zanussi, Jim Jarmusch and Atom Egoyan were "discovered" at Mannheim.
