A GIRL LIKE HER
A GIRL LIKE HER reveals the hidden history and perfect storm of circumstances that led to over a million women surrendering children for adoption in the US in the 1950s and 60s. During the “idyllic” post-WWII years, a pregnant daughter meant immediate expulsion from the middle class. Families banished their pregnant daughters to maternity homes where they could live out their pregnancy, give birth, and surrender their child -- away from the prying eyes of neighbours. They were told to keep their secret, move on and forget. But, does a woman ever forget her child?
Ann Fessler
American filmmaker Anne Fessler began making videos and short films in the 1970s, mainly on the stories of women and the impact of mass media images on their lives. Among her credits: Cliff & Hazel (1999), on her adoptive parents, Along the Pale River (2001), on the search for her biological mother. She authored the book, A Girl Like Her, on which this film is based.
