LA NOCHE DE ENFRENTE (INTO THE NIGHT)

"Inspired by the writings of fellow Chilean Hernan del Solar, (the film) spans several decades... and jumps back and forth in time with little concern for the traditional laws of storytelling. Indeed, as the film’s aging hero, Don Celso, remarks, time is like a 'game of marbles,' and the sentiment very much summarizes Ruiz’s freewheeling approach to narrative, which is on ample display in the scenario’s multiple crisscrossing plotlines, flashbacks, dreams and fantasies." -- Jordan Mintzer (Hollywood Reporter) "Drifting on a tide of gentle delirium through a man's memories as he considers his own impending demise, this fond farewell is more nimble and mischievous than elegiac, although it attains a wry poignancy in light of its maker's (recent) passing." -- Justin Chang (Variety) "It’s a whimsical and tender leavetaking note to the world, to cinema and to his native Chile, from which he was exiled for many years. Playful and wildly imaginative to the last, this film shows Ruiz going out dreaming, and laughing." -- Jonathan Romney (Screen Daily)
