LIGHT DROPS
A jeep slowly crosses the marketplace of Maputo in Mozambique. Its driver is Rui Pedro, a middle-aged man who seems unruffled by the hubbub around him. Leaving the city centre behind, he reaches the outskirts of town and continues along a dusty road deeper and deeper into the forest. He stops at the burned-out ruins of some farm houses and descends towards the river. As he watches the river flow by, he remembers his childhood... The son of Portuguese settlers, Rui Pedro grew up in the colonial era, a time when agriculture was tightly controlled by the Portuguese administration. Traditional farming was prohibited, native labour was frequently displaced, families were split, a regime of compulsory labour was enforced and small pockets of native resistance were beginning to appear, precursors to the later fight for independence from Portugal. Rui Pedro grew up in this environment, a boy deep in the forest landscape divided by a mysterious river. One country divided into two distinct worlds -- that of the white colonists and that of the indigenous blacks, master and slave, violence and peace, passion and love. At the age of fourteen, facing the inevitable disappearance of his childhood, Rui Pedro was forced to choose his ground, a choice between opposite sides of the river.
