YANK TANKS
Because of the U.S. trade embargo and its chronic shortage of hard currency, Cuba hasn't been able to import American cars for decades. Necessity being the mother of invention, Cuban drivers have learned how to keep their vintage Buicks, DeSotos and Cadillacs operating, albeit precariously, with the help of skillful mechanics, ingeniously recycled spare parts and clever customizing. Like an exotic, endangered species, these colourful cars roam around an island paradise trapped in a 1950s time warp. As beacons of individuality in a sea of government-induced conformity, they represent freedom for those who own them. After several trips to Cuba, the director and his producer-brother have succeeded in taking a close look into the underground world of Cuban cars and finding along the way a gallery of eccentric characters -- curators of the largest, living automobile museum in the world. The film introduces us to mechanics, parts inventors, race-car drivers, artists and owners who work daily on mechanical problems that would easily usher any similar North American car to the scrap yard."A genial documentary about the proliferation of pre-Revolution American automobiles still running on the streets of Cuba, YANK TANKS has an exotic/nostalgic appeal." -- Dennis Harvey (Variety)
David Schendel

It was on the basis of this work that Schendel earned a development grant for a screenplay of The Fischer Family.
