SINNERS
From the 19th century until the 1970s, at least 22 Magdalen Laundries were in operation in Ireland, and there were similar laundries in England and Scotland. These were "shelters" for pregnant unmarried women, run by Roman Catholic nuns. The women had been thrown out of their homes by their families. No one else wanted them and they had nowhere else to go. They found themselves incarcerated in the Magdalen Laundries and forced to work in appalling conditions. Their babies were taken away after they were born and either placed in an orphanage or given away to new parents, often abroad, often without consent or proper documentation. Set in the 1960s, SINNERS tells the story of just such a pregnant young woman, Anne Marie, from the west of Ireland, who is committed to the local Magdalen Laundry by her family. Once inside the gates of the convent laundry, she is made to don an ugly uniform, has her hair sheared and is deprived of her own name. From now on she will be known as Theresa. Placed out of sight and thus out of mind, by the colluding institutions of church and state, Theresa and the other women follow a daily grind of prayer and penance under the scrutiny of Sister Bernadette and the other nuns into whose "care" they have been placed. At first disconsolate, Theresa garners strength from her friendships with the other women. As time passes, she refuses to accept the injustice of her imprisonment. Her obstinacy pays off -- but not without cost and compromise.
