SEE WHAT HAPPENS -- THE STORY OF DA PENNEBAKER AND CHRIS HEGEDUS
A former engineer, advertising copywriter and painter, Donn Alan Pennebaker began making experimental and documentary films in the 1950s. Beginning with Daybreak Express (1953), he emerged as one of the foremost proponents of direct cinema, a style of filmmaking which favoured the immediate recording of reality in as unobtrusive a manner as possible. He worked for a time at Drew Associates with Richard Leacock and Albert Maysles, and although he left in 1963, he continued to collaborate with Leacock on such seminal films as DON'T LOOK BACK (1967) and MONTEREY POP (1969), the latter often considered the first "concert" film. It was Leacock and Pennebaker who are credited with inventing the portable 16mm synchronized sound camera, an important step in the popularization of direct cinema in the making of documentaries. In 1977, Pennebaker began working with camerawoman-turned-filmmaker Chris Hegedus, whom he married in 1982, and his team has continued to give us some of the most remarkable musical, political and social documentaries of the past quarter century. The producers of SEE WHAT HAPPENS had unlimited access to the Pennebaker library and this documentary includes excerpts from their most famous films as well as previously unseen footage.
