THE LAST WITNESS
The body of an old drug addict, Yang Dal-su, is found floating down the Han river with a dagger in his chest. Homicide Detective Oh comes across several clues -- metal-framed glasses specially manufactured in Japan, a fragment of a name card with the word "Daeryang" printed on it, two photographs -- which lead him to an elementary school which Yang had attended many decades ago. Oh stumbles across a diary written half a century ago by a woman, Sohn Ji-hye, who joined the Communist Party and infiltrated the notorious Koje detention camp for dissidents and POWs during the Korean War to save the man she loved, Hwang-seok. Yang was a guard at the camp, had fallen in love with Sohn and helped her escape. The two disappeared together. Hwang-seok, unrepentant, was recently released from jail after serving a long term for his political crimes. Coincidentally, his release occurred just one day before Yang was murdered. Then Kim Joong-yeop, another security from the camp, is also found murdered..."Part contemporary crime thriller, part period political drama, part epic love story, (LAST WITNESS) is a handsomely tooled production..." -- Derek Elley (Variety)
