LEWIS & CLARK: GREAT JOURNEY WEST
In 1803, Thomas Jefferson commissioned the first U.S. overland expedition to the Pacific coast. The expedition, which started in early 1804 and lasted for 2 years, was led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark, and its broad purpose was to explore and map the Missouri river, its tributaries and the great Northwest, hopefully to discover a practical water route across the continent. The expedition encountered and conquered an endless series of physical challenges as the 40-odd men of the "Corps of Discovery" travelled through raging rivers, buffalo-filled prairies, sub-zero temperatures and rugged mountains on their 13,000-kilometre journey to the Pacific and back. This large-format film, carefully researched and meticulously recreated, chronicles how the explorers were helped by generous American Indians, including Sacagawea, a teenaged Native American girl who accompanied the group and whose contributions were invaluable to the expedition's success."All history lessons should be as enthralling. (This) dramatic recreation of the epochal... expedition -- an undertaking that was in its day equivalent in difficulty and danger to a trip to the moon -- represents a truly spectacular use of the IMAX format. A really tremendous piece of filmmaking and a stunning visual and aural treat." -- Steve Simel (TVGuide.Com)
