A HIDDEN LIFE
Motherless teenager Biela lives with her father on a Brazilian coffee plantation. When her father dies she is whisked away to live with cousins in a small, provincial town. Here, her aunt Constana sets about preparing Biela for her entry into polite society, ordering expensive dresses for the girl and teaching her "civilized" behaviour. But Biela is a stubborn girl. She resists "improvement" and prefers the company of the kitchen staff. One day she is introduced to a boy, Modesto, who has been chosen to be her husband. Although she feels little for him, when he abandons her, she is devastated. She locks herself in the bedroom and endures her humiliation in silence. She rips up her fancy dresses and returns to wearing farm clothes. She spends her days in the kitchen with the maids, refusing to join her cousins at the dining-room table. Her only source of joy is a sick dog she rescues from the street. She cares for it as if it were her own child. She looks for a place where she can raise it in peace and tranquility..."Suzana Amaral continues her obsession with the dictum that in cinema less is more... Faced with a Brazilian cinema groaning under the weight of its own excess, exhibitionism, and the vanity of its directors, she has chosen a path less trodden." -- Luiz Zanin Oricchio (O Estado do So Paulo)
