INVINCIBLE
Zishe Breitbart is the eldest son in a family of Jewish blacksmiths in a town in eastern Poland. Prodigiously strong, he's spotted by an agent and whisked off to become a star in 1932 Berlin. Soon he's working in Hanussen's Theatre of the Occult Palace, a cabaret whose owner performs hypnotism, dabbles in the dark arts, predicts Hitler's rise to power, and hopes to get a job as minister for the occult in the Nazi cabinet. Dressed as the mythical German superhero Siegfried, Zishe entertains the city's beau monde and Nazi storm troopers alike with incredible feats of strength. Also at the theatre is a piano player, Marta Farra, who is Hanussen's lover, muse and a benighted foil to this malign impresario. The crisis comes when Zishe can no longer stomach his fake Aryanism and reveals himself to be Jewish to an audience of appalled Brown Shirts. Now that his secret is out, Zishe battles Hanussen for Marta and desperately tries to organize his people against coming events."A heartbreaking and fitting encapsulation of a perennial Herzog theme: the struggle of the individual for self-assertion and freedom in the face of crippling, malign social norms." -- Clark Collis (Film Four)
Werner Herzog
Born in Munich in 1942, Werner Herzog is often considered the "romantic visionary" of the New German Cinema, many of his most memorable films dealing with enigmatic heroes and mystical landscapes. He directed his first film, Herakles, at the age of 19, and he has since produced, directed and/or written more than forty short, medium and feature length films, over half of them documentaries. Among his features are: SIGNS OF LIFE (1967), FATA MORGANA (1968), LAND OF SILENCE AND DARKNESS (1971), AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD (1972), THE MYSTERY OF KASPAR HAUSER (1974), HEART OF GLASS (1976), STROSZEK (1977), NOSFERATU: THE VAMPYRE (1978), WOYZECK (1978), FITCARRALDO (1981), WHERE THE GREEN ANTS DREAM (1983), COBRA VERDE (1987), SCREAM OF STONE (1991) and MY BEST FIEND (1999).
